Google Inc. announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Postini, a global leader in on-demand communications security and compliance solutions serving more than 35,000 businesses and 10 million users worldwide. Postini’s services — which include message security, archiving, encryption, and policy enforcement — can be used to protect a company’s email, instant messaging, and other web-based communications. Dell Manufactures the Google Search Appliance

June 22nd, 2007
Google has recently started working with Dell to manufacture the Google Search Appliance. This partnership enables Google to focus more on the software side of the Google Search Appliance. Additionally, Dell’s international reach is helping to make the Google Search Appliance available faster in markets around the globe.
This is a big step for Google…letting someone else close to the code on the Google Search Appliance.  Also the last I checked Dell was close with Fast Search and Transfer a Google Search Appliance Competitor.

Microsoft Using Monopoly Powers to Crush Desktop Search Tool Vendors with VISTA

May 23rd, 2007
Desktop Search Vendors should be aware that Microsoft is intending to control the desktop search market by integrating Desktop Search with the Windows Vista operating system. The Microsoft desktop search in Vista can not be deleted or uninstalled

While this might not be bad for some home or casual users but enterprises that are standardizing on one of Microsoft’s competitors will have to manually stop the indexing on each desktop that is using VISTA and live with the integration that is in outlook and on the desktop by the start button.

At a recent trade show the Microsoft representative wondered why “any enterprise user would want to use anything but Microsoft Desktop Search” and that a great percentage of Microsoft’s support tickets are caused by 3rd party desktop search tools.

My fear is that once all of the desktop search vendors are not in the desktop search business anymore then Microsoft will stop upgrading their desktop search tool…just like the browser market a few years ago.

So if Windows Media player is unbundled in Europe why not unbundle the Microsoft Desktop Search tool or at least let it be uninstalled on Windows VISTA.

I am happy that Microsoft is finally serious about desktop search and search in general, but what took them so long and why not give customers a choice and let the market decide…. btw most desktop search products are free so what does Microsoft really have to lose….more on that later….can you say Google.

Google Offers Fix for Desktop Search Tools

February 22nd, 2007

Web application security leader Watchfire, today announced its security researchers have discovered a vulnerability in Google Desktop which could enable a malicious individual to achieve not only remote, persistent access to sensitive data, but in some conditions full system control.Watchfire’s security researchers have uncovered a new attack methodology that clearly emphasizes the danger of integration between desktop applications and Web based applications as an aperture for a malicious attacker to escalate his/her privileges by crossing from the Web environment to the desktop application environment. This outcome is the combined result of the integration between the Google.com Web site and Google Desktop, and Google Desktop’s failure to properly encode output containing malicious or unexpected characters.

This attack, described in a new research paper describes how the malicious logic acts as a parasite, using JavaScript code to control Google Desktop functionality. While evading current information protection systems, such as anti-virus software and firewalls allowing the attacker to covertly hijack sensitive local information. (For example: Office documents, Media files, emails, in many cases, even deleted emails, chat sessions and files could be accessed.)

Google Mini For Enterprise Search

January 30th, 2007

Google announced that the Google Mini now offers sophisticated search features for finding and sharing information within small businesses and departmental groups, including document
and user-level security, as well as access to any business content through Google Onebox for Enterprise.

Starting at just $1995, the new Google Mini introduces:

• Secure Search: Specially enhanced to support the information-sharing
needs inside of small businesses and departmental workgroups, the
Google Mini offers document and user-level security across all business content. Google’s access control capabilities integrate with existing security systems, ensuring that employees can access only information they are authorized to view.

• Google OneBox for Enterprise: Introduced last year as part of the Google Search Appliance™ (3), the Google OneBox for Enterprise feature lets businesses provide secure access to any information – such as contact and calendar info, HR benefits, sales leads, or purchase order status – through the convenience of a Google™ search box.

Google OneBox for Enterprise is a feature developed in partnership with some of the world’s leading enterprise application vendors. With Google OneBox for Enterprise, employees can search across a greater variety of corporate information stored in such business systems as Business Objects, Cognos, Cisco, Employease, Microsoft Exchange,
Netsuite, Oracle, Salesforce.com, SAP, SAS, and others. Organizations can also create OneBox modules to access applications built in-house.

• Site Search Improvements: Site administrators can now link the
Google Mini search results page with Google Analytics™ to provide more detailed information about how people use search on their site in order to improve the overall site experience. The new Google Mini also automatically generates sitemaps - allowing webmasters to expose more public content for crawling and indexing by Google.com.

The Google Mini is offered in versions that search from 50,000 up to 300,000 documents, includes a year of support and is available for purchase online. Thousands of small-business customers already rely on the Google Mini to provide fast and relevant search results for their businesses.
