Google is building apps that are easier to use then Microsoft’s, this could cause users to leave windows based applications. While Google has been successful in web search it is having a difficult time moving past search advertising as the only revenue source.

Microsoft was already months into A massive project aimed at taking down Google when the truth began to dawn on Bill Gates. It was December 2003. He was poking around on the Google company website and came across a help-wanted page with descriptions of all the open jobs at Google. Why, he wondered, were the qualifications for so many of them identical to Microsoft job specs? Google was a web search business, yet here on the screen were postings for engineers with backgrounds that had nothing to do with search and everything to do with Microsoft’s core business—people trained in things like operating-system design, compiler optimization, and distributed-systems architecture. Gates wondered whether Microsoft might be facing much more than a war in search. An e-mail he sent to a handful of execs that day said, in effect, “We have to watch these guys. It looks like they are building something to compete with us.”

Items to consider when choosing a Desktop Search Tool for something other then personal use.

Security

Most of the Desktop Search Tools on the market today are intended for a single user in a non shared environment. It is not recommended to put a desktop search tool on a shared machine unless it is disclosed to all users that everything is being indexed. This could present an issue with PC’s in public areas. The reason is that with some Desktop Search Tools can index all files, websites, and documents are indexed and could be accessible by all of the users of that PC.

If a PC is lost or stolen then the thief can find a users information more quickly unless access to the Desktop Search Tool and the index is better secured,

Securing Desktop Search Tools should be done by creating a policy to educate users, creating protective around the index, and managing the index properly.
