Getting the Max from your Mini
Now that Google has announced a low end version of its search appliance called the Google Mini organizations are looking at ways to use it in their enterprises. The important thing to remember is that the Google Mini and Googel Search appliance work well in the environment that they have been designed for. The good news is that these products are capable of doing a lot, the bad news is that it may take some time to understand how to do it.
Organizations with small websites and intranets that have content available via http (mini does not crawl javascript) will have the most success with the mini. The low price point and 30 day money back option make it easy to purchase.
The issues can become apparent when an organization needs to move beyond the scope of the mini or who do not have the technical resources to help it crawl content that may be difficult to get to. The limited presale and no post sale phone support may present an issue for 5 to 10% of the organizations looking at the mini.
